SUSTAINABILITY

We are proud to say that the Sustainability in Tech Summit will take place at The National Gallery, a venue which has created a sustainable environment.

As The National Gallery enters its third century of bringing people and paintings together, a key priority has been to develop a comprehensive plan for a sustainable Gallery, one that aligns with our goal of the conservation of our masterpieces for future generations.  Last year, we brought on board a new Sustainability Manager to help in the process.

Through a new sustainability strategy that includes initiatives such as increased recycling with no waste to landfill, reducing our buildings’ carbon footprint with energy efficiency improvements, and undertaking a full measurement process to understand our scope 3 emissions, The National Gallery aims to minimise its carbon footprint.  We are zero waste to landfill, with a recycling rate of 75% in 2024. Any non-recyclable material is safely incinerated at an Energy from Waste facility, which generates power for London homes and businesses.

The work being carried out on The Sainsbury Wing for its reopening to the public in May 2025 was strongly focused on sustainable practices, targeting a BREEAM rating of excellent, which it is on track to achieve. The project has had a circular economy drive, with recovered materials from the build suitable for reuse hosted and rehomed on Globechain, which connects re-usable materials with organisations in need, often charities.

As we move away from reliance on fossil fuels, the refurbished Sainsbury Wing kitchens will contain only electric induction hobs and ovens.

Sustainability

CRN is committed to the journey in becoming more sustainable by using the guidelines set out by Ecovadis and we will be working towards the accreditation. The goal is to reduce paper consumption across events and improve recycling rates, curb food waste and alter menus with an aim to include locally sourced, organic produce. We have also committed to deliver carbon offsetting at events wherever possible and provide delegates with accessible venues. We will be closely evaluating each event and considering how we can improve in the following areas; energy, transport, water usage, recycling, economic and local environment/community.

Carbon Offsetting

The Channel Company have partnered with Ecosphere+ to ensure all our remaining greenhouse gas emissions are offset. Working with Ecosphere+, we calculate the emissions from all our events, including those from event operations, venues and delegates. We then purchase the equivalent number of carbon offset credits to counter-act our activities. These credits are supporting the protection of vital rainforest in Peru, by funding conservation work and creating sustainable sources of income for locals to minimise incentives for deforestation.
